Sabbath Worship: Saturday
Registered Charity No. 1213090

What is the Sabbath?

The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week (Saturday), set apart by God as a day of rest and worship. It was established at the very beginning of human history when God rested on the seventh day after creating the world.

The word "Sabbath" comes from the Hebrew word "Shabbat," meaning "to cease" or "to rest." It is a weekly reminder of God's creative power and His desire for us to find rest and renewal in Him.

For believers in The Church Of God, the Sabbath is not a burden but a blessing—a special time set aside each week to:

  • Rest from our regular work and activities
  • Worship God with fellow believers
  • Spend quality time with family
  • Reflect on God's goodness and provision
  • Refresh our minds, bodies, and spirits
Sabbath Worship

Biblical Foundation

The Sabbath is rooted in Scripture from Genesis to Revelation

At Creation

God established the Sabbath at the end of Creation week, blessing and sanctifying the seventh day as a gift for all humanity.

"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy." — Genesis 2:2-3

In the Commandments

The Sabbath commandment is the fourth of the Ten Commandments, written by God's own finger on tablets of stone.

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God." — Exodus 20:8-10

In Christ's Example

Jesus, our perfect example, regularly observed the Sabbath, teaching in synagogues and demonstrating how to keep it with joy.

"He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom." — Luke 4:16

Why Saturday?

Understanding the seventh-day Sabbath

The Weekly Cycle

The seven-day week has been observed since Creation. Saturday is the seventh day of the week, as confirmed by calendars, dictionaries, and encyclopedias worldwide. The word for Saturday in many languages literally means "Sabbath" (e.g., Spanish: Sábado).

Biblical Witness

Throughout Scripture, the seventh day is consistently identified as the Sabbath. Jesus was crucified on Friday (preparation day), rested in the tomb on Sabbath (Saturday), and rose on the first day of the week (Sunday) — confirming the weekly cycle.

Historical Continuity

Jewish communities have faithfully observed the seventh-day Sabbath for thousands of years. This unbroken tradition confirms that the biblical Sabbath is indeed Saturday.

Early Church Practice

The apostles and early believers continued to observe the Sabbath after Christ's resurrection, meeting in synagogues and homes on the seventh day as recorded in the book of Acts.
